My father died of alcoholism at 44, his liver gave out while he was homeless lying in a park sleeping. Very sad. My mother is in AA. My brother is 14 and already seems to have symptoms of alcohol abuse, drinks alone etc. There are other alkies in my family as well but they seem to function. I went through the whole alcohol abuse when I was a teenage, drank by myself all the time drank to drunkeness earned a reputation of an alky. But now that I am 25 I have a beer or two mabye every two or three weeks sometimes longer and dont miss it at all. When I have those beers I drink them over a course of a few hours and never get drunk. I think that it runs in my family but I dont believe I am an alcoholic because other things in my life are much more important and I find other ways to deal wth my issues. I wnat my daughter growing up not seeing me drunk and not thinking its ok so that to me is enough to keep me free from getting drunk for a long long time.

I do drink alcoholic beverages, even though my father was an alcoholic. I didn't have my first drink until I was eighteen though. I was very scared of becoming addicted myself. I don't drink often and I always drink with people that I trust, like my husband. It's easy to get carried away and drink way too much. You should have someone there who can monitor how much you're drinking and let you know when it's time to stop.

I grew up with 2 alcoholics, my mother and my stepdad. They were the "need a few drinks to relax" type of drinkers ... with a few drinks always turning into a few more.

I drink socially, and only when I go out for an evening, which equates to about 2 times a year, 3 at most. I don't drink at home or around my children, and I don't allow anyone else to drink around my kids, or be around them while intoxicated.

And yes, my decisions regarding alcohol around my kids is definately from my experience with my own parents. No child should have to see their parents, the people they trust most, in a position of being out of control, senseless or just flat out stupid. I hated seeing my parents like that, I hate what it does to a persons rational thought, self control, patience, tolerance and a thousand other things. I love my kids far too much to subject them to that type of image or example.

Yes-and my family thinks its a problem - not all people raised by alcoholics are or will become alcoholics. I like the taste of alcohol but do not need it or use it to become intoxicated. The abuse of alcohol is there concern as it is their problem. I have family uncomfortable with my drinking in their home and when they visit - I have no issue with not drinking as it is offensive to them. I have no issue with abstaining ever - that was their problem lack of consideration and inability to abstain or limit intake. There is a difference between people who drink and alcoholics. One cares about other peoples fellings the other only cares about themselves.

I grew up with an alcoholic mother. It didn't make me one. I enjoy social drinking and know what my limit is. In fact I am sharing a bottle of great wine with a friend tonight

I did at one point, but now I don't really drink enough to get in your eye. Maybe once every few months. And not enough to get drunk.

Enough of my father's family suffered from alcoholism for me to see how damaging it is.

I do occasionally. Depending on my mood, its best to surround yourself with positive people since they do say your family background has alot to do with it.
