He's spoilt rotten and got all the usual things

Something useful like a high chair or a collapsible buggy. He is too young to know the difference and I am sure that with all the othe expenses of having a baby, his parents will appreciate it.

Or as it's his first Christmas you could get him a keepsake like a piece of jewellery, something that his parents can put away for him for when he's older.

Or there's something I wish I had done when my kids were little and that is buy a newspaper on the day they were born, 1st birthday, 1st Christmas etc and also buy the record that was at number 1 in the charts on that day then keep them in a lovely gift bag. It would have been really good fun and nostalgic to look back on those sorts of things now especially if you had a local paper with house prices in. That would be a really good thing to compare!

if he is spoilt rotten then give his parents some money to put into his bank account or trust fund. It's not as if he will understand the whole concept of Christmas.
My son was 9 months old last Christmas & he was bought far too many toys. We had to hide some & get them out as the year went on as there was no way he could play with them all.

I buy for my granddaughters at mastermindtoys.com. If you have AirMiles, you can also collect and shop through the AirMiles.ca site and go to MastermindToys through there. If he's spoiled rotten, get him something that will help him learn; that is a good way to get around the spoiled rotten thing. There is LeapPads and Vtech learning toys for that age.
Good luck!

you have received a lot of feed back regarding this question..Have you asks your grandson's parents what he needs? Many have suggested a bank acct. or clothes. What about diapers and formula. I'm sure that his parents would appreciate the break from having to buy those items. They are also a practical gift. you could also make a small gift basket with lotion, shampoo, etc.
Good luck with your selection and keep us posted

Spring/Summer clothes for a 12-18 month old. Babies grow really quick so if you do the normal "gran" thing and buy him a nice warm jumper for winter, he won't be able to wear it next year.

Or a learning toy, with different sounds, colours, lights and textures that can be put in or on his cot/pram.

At nine months the baby is learning new things everyday. Some kind of hands on toy would be great it teaches good eye hand cordination and concentration.

Kids love playing in those tunnel things you can fold up.

My kids loved that musical carousel thing by Disney that projected pictures on the wall at night when they were going to sleep...that was the coolest...wonder if they make that anymore?

Big talking stuffed toys are kind of cool...the more they do the better.

Clothes however are always appreciated I'm sure.

Something his mom and dad would appreciate you buying him. He's 9 months and not going to know the difference. I am sure mom and dad would like you to buy him clothes, or other useful items.

I would get a toy that a baby can pull up on and play while holding onto it, but standing up, it helps them with their walking. Like a play station, that has a piano, or something.
