The noise is a low volume knock that seems to be comming from the upper half or back of engine. The noise deminisses on deacceleration. I can preform many test myself. A starting point would be nice. I'm leanning tword the EGR or an emmisions problem. Can the emmisions make such a noise?

As to the frist 2 responses: Its not an obvious spark knock. Nor does it get louder on acceleration, its the same at idel or 1500 rpm.

my wife's intrepid had a "mystery noise" that went away about 800 km. into it's first taste of synthetic oil , try it , it might work for you

It could be anything from a bad belt to major engine problems. Usually a knocking that gets louder with higher RPMs is a bad sign. You could always get the car diagnosed by a shop then just fix it yourself, but those cars are REALLY hard to work on at home.

Try higher octan gas first, It may just a fuel knock if it goes away on decel..
