If he's been barking as you describe for 11 years that's a lot of history for the behavior, which means that it's going to be really hard to extinguish it. Hate to recommend, but a citronella collar may do the trick. The ASPCA says that these are a humane way to rapidly stop barking and in extreme situations like these, it may be a good choice. Remember too that your saying "Stop!" or "No barking" etc is also rewarding the dog for barking - so when you ignore this behavior, it must be total. Good luck. I expect that once your dog understands that the barking / howling is not what you want, he'll relax!

Personally I am very anti-shock collar. From what I have seen it can cause some other problems rather then just some barking. You dog probably has separation anxiety when you leave the house. You can try and calm him/her down before you leave and maybe give him something to chew on or a treat. Depending on the age and size you may also want to consider crating. If all else fails, and you want a collar, try a collar that shoots water, not shocks.

Well, Jack Russells do have a tendency to bark more then some dogs. Maybe some exercise before you go would help calm him down? There is a bark collar also that they sell at Petsmart. It sprays citronella spray by his face when he barks. It's not harmful to the dog, just annoying. Maybe you could give that a try?

Use a shock collar. They work well and you can adjust the settings.
Jack russells are extremely active dogs and need to be contantly stimulated to be happy. It sounds like he is lonely or bored. Try taking him for a long walk or run right before you leave, and maybe that will get him to sleep or at least delay the barking for a while.

Walmart has cost effective products that are safe. spray collors. or a machine that gives off a negative tone ( in effect irritating the dog back when he barks the way he irritates some others)
I don't mind a barking dog that's how they communi=cate. But the neighbours won't appreciate it Iknow.
I like the negative tone machine because it works for more than one dog. and who knows what citrinella will do to eyes nose or mouth. that is what those collors spay in their face.

What we did with our dog was ensure she had a long walk before hand and so would be tired and wouldn't mind sleeping. If he keeps barking the best thing to do is ignore him. If you keep going back he'll think he can keep howling as you'll rescue him. Have you tried leaving him with something of yours? Like a sock or something so it smells of you?

We tend to think of dog training as a series of steps for teaching particular behaviors. To teach a dog to stay in a particular position, you reward her as she remains in place for gradually longer times, at gradually greater distances, with gradually increasing degrees of distraction. Now, this is fine, training does involve teaching dogs specific behaviors with a step-by-step approach. This week, though, I’m going to discuss three mental habits that will not only enable you train more effectively but also make life pleasant for both you and your dog.

Your dog is stressed due to him thinking you are his responsibility and your gone and he can't look after you, just imagine one of your kids disappearing for eight hours, that's how he feels. You need to adjust his perception of you. I can recommend a book called 'The Dog Listener' by Jan Fennel. Everything will become clear once you have read it. It should be compulsive reading for all dog owners in my opinion.
