It could be a dietary issue, such as an allergy, or a more serious physical condition. Some cats are more "nervous" than others and groom themselves excessivly losing a lot of hair.
It's something a vet should look into - checking the overall health of your kitty. A blood panel is the gold standard of the veterinary internist's diagnostic tools - it can determine kidney, liver problems, anemia, calcium/phosphorus levels, etc.
Excessive hair loss can be a sign of something more serious going on with the cat's health. Skin and coat are frequently the first signs that a cat has problems.
Allergies to chicken or corn in the diet when these foods are fed exclusively over time can also cause hair loss.

Could be lots of things, normal fur loss due to heat or weather like humidity, could be the cat is stressed or scared, could be nutritional deficiency, could be fleas or parasites, or it could be mange. Has your cat been to a vet or had shots? Have you checked for fleas? How much fur is coming out?
