There are black charcoal-like traces in the mucus of my nasal secretions and when i cough also (i have a little cold). does anyone have any idea what are these? sorry if it's discusting. Thx...

Sometimes I get that when I have been working where the air is especially dirty, I blow my nose and the sputum is all black from the crap I have been breathing in. However, if this is a persistent cough, or you have other symptoms you should see your doc. It could be blood, but bloody sputum does not always mean bad news, it could be traces of blood because your nasal passages are/were dry. You didnt speculate further, on your health condition or other symptoms so I cant elaborate....If you start hacking up bright red blood or clots, then go see your doc, other wise dont worry too much.....

Blood turns black when it is clotted and air gets to it. There are millions of little capillaries in the nose and some are bleeding. Unless you are having a full on nosebleed then there is nothing to worry about

You might have been losing your mucos plug. That would be my guess. It's totally normal for that to happen around this time for you. It could mean that you'll be going into preterm labor, though you can lose the plug anywhere from 3-6 weeks before delivery.

Sputum may be analysed in a clinical lab. Routine sputum culture may also be done.
