UNCF was started by the president of Tuskegee (a Black college) in 1944. Considering the fact that Jim Crow was still in full effect, most Blacks did not have the option of attending White colleges and universities. White women were even limited in their college choices until the femenist movement hit. White men, however, were not limited at all.

Even if Blacks were welcome, most could not afford a college education. The UNCF was created to help Black students attend Black colleges such as Hampton, Howard, Fisk, Tuskeege as well as non-Black colleges that were accepting of Black students.

America has never had racial equality and has never been fair. If you look at history, this nation has always been very exclusive. It was the norm to have signs saying things like, "No Irish" or "No Italians". And of course the infamous "No Blacks, No Jews, No Dogs" sign. Minority groups, wether they be ethnic, racial, or religious, had to develop support networks or else perish.

To sum up your question: Whenever you saw organizations that were for Whites only, they were designed to oppress, abuse, humiliate, or eradicate other groups. Whenever you see minority organizations, they are usually designed uplift and empower that group. Also, minority groups generally welcome people outside of that group to help. There are many non-Black members of the UNCF. Most Jewish organizations in my area openly welcome the support of non-Jews. I was even offered a job with an organization that helps Latinos find jobs in the DC area, and I'm not anywhere near being Latin. That is why typically it's not acceptable to have an organization for Whites. Generally Whites (specifically White Anglo Saxon Protestants...aka...WASPs) were the oppressors, and having organizations for Whites was a way of keeping other groups from making social, educational, or financial progress. To have a White organization today would be looked down upon mostly for that reason.

Besides, does it really make sense to have support organizations for White people in a nation that is mostly White?

because as the white majority you have a white privilege that you obviously do not even recognize. you have never had education withheld from you, nor are not part of the achievement gap that exists...if you want to know why there is one go spend 30 minutes in a school district in an urban evironment (if you can handle it) upon walking in you will notice the huge disparities in where you go to school and where minorities go to school and what they have to endure. before asking such a question, do some research, go somewhere you've never been and take a walk in someone else's shoes white boy and you will find out.

For the same reason it's ok to have a Congressional Black Caucus but not a Congressional White Caucus. Some folks just need to feel special.

All such racial-oriented funds should be abolished and replaced by just MERIT FUND - a fund to help the needy based purely on one's merits!

confident,it probably be seen racist and discriminatory. N-e-g-r-o or N-e-g-r-o-i-d refers back to the race of black and brown African human beings-that's the main appropriate scientific call. Yellow refers back to the Asian human beings (Japan,China, the Southeast Asia countries). Caucasian is the white human beings .

Well said, Mid...

I am white and from a rural midwest community with rebel flags flying at several houses. I was introduced to black people when I went to college (and no my parents had no money). I got student loans and will be paying on them for several years to come. Anyway, guess what? I actually liked the black people I met. We stayed in the same dorms, played on the same softball team and ate in the same cafeteria. We partied together, laughed together, cried together, and ran our tails off for our coach together. They also teased me a lot for knowing nothing about black people. They used to tell me that black people don't swim, or blacks don't do this or that, and then wait to see if I believed them. We rarely discussed blacks in my home. Maybe because my parents knew how much I loved Charley Pride, so they decided not to say too much against blacks, I don't know. But I knew that a black person would not have been welcomed in my community, but no one ever gave me any concrete evidence as to why. My black friends were never offended by my ignorance, or my questions about why people say certain things about them. They just told me how it was. They were very patient with how naive and uninformed I was about how life was for them. I never once thought about how my white friends were paying for their college education, and never once thought about how my black friends payed for theirs, either. I was just glad to have met them. Regardless of how they got there, my life is much richer for having been open to new friendships, black or white.

I teach at a school for poor, white, at-risk kids and I get paid nothing. And these kids could certainly use a white kid college fund for poor rural kids with meth using or alcoholic parents. And I could certainly stand to get paid for teaching. But, I see the need and I am doing my best to help. And if some rich, rural person wanted to start a fund just for those kinds of white kids, I'm sure they could. So if black people want to give their money to help other blacks go to college, more power to them. And if white people want to donate to that fund, that's their choice.

When I was in college, I worked at a Phonathon to get donations for the school and people could donate money and say they wanted it to go specifically to the softball team. I am assuming the ***** College Fund gets their money from private donations. If a black person, or a white person, regardless of the reasons, wants to donate $10,000 to a specific cause, who do you think you are to tell them that they can't do that? I think Midoria? already explained it very well as to why they might have that fund. I'm just saying it's really none of your business where people choose to donate their money.

True, I am white. I went to college, and I never received any help for my education, and my parents didn't make much money either. But I know a lot of people that were poorer than I was. And before you make a comment about me being stupid enough to teach for free, I will tell you. If someone doesn't help these kids, they will end up on drugs or welfare, or in prison. So I am trying to help them now and break the cycle of poverty and get them off the path of self-destruction in which they were heading. And we are now starting to go out and ask for donations to help us help these kids. Because I am the only certified teacher and I can't afford to live on nothing for one more year. But, I'm sure there will be someone like you who will gripe about why they should get any help when it's their parents own fault for why they are so poor to begin with. Oh well, you can't please everyone.

By the way, my parents are not bad people, they were just raised with racist attitudes. But they were taught ideas about something they really didn't know anything about. But I knew they were beginning to change when my mom was watching a beauty pageant and was hoping the black girl from Missouri would win. I guess there's hope for all of us. Maybe someday.

I think it would have been funny if back in the 50's and 60's some rich black person could have started a restaurant and put up a sign that said "No whites allowed". I bet white people would have been so indignant they would have tried to make that person let them eat there. Would have been kind of ironic.

White people are hated. It is like the other races think white people are out to get them. The world is crazy.
