I was studying in France and was held up in defeated France during last war. In the meantime I changed school residence and my family was not aware as no communications were possible.Somehow after the invasion of France,I received a letter from my brother who was a Private USA soldier who landed in France and he had succeeded in tracing my abode, through the RED CROSS.
How did this Red Cross organisation work in such circumstances?

The Red Cross is a neutral organization and is allowed such information investigation without harassment. Your brother may had a small lead and the Red Cross acted on it. They were and still are pretty good at.

I'm only guessing but I bet you were traceable through military or government documentation and the Red Cross was able to access it in these circumstances.
