We just went through this. Go to the school and pay directly. Get a receipt in your name. I would also let the school know the situation. Ask them if they see signs of neglect to please report it immediately to you. If and when you go to court (you probably will if she is crazy enough to not care if her child eats) this can help prove that she can not take care of the child properly. Anything you do above child support make sure you get documentation.
I am sure the school is not going to let her go hungary (ask anyway). Most schools just substitute a cheaper meal.

Yes, many schools will NOT give your child a lunch anymore if your account isn't paid. (this is in California) They are only required by law to give them a pint of milk, but are not required to give them lunch. I thought this was a horrible thing when I got a note home from my child's school, but I can see their point. They get tired of the families who notoriously don't pay, and skip out. They have a free lunch program for children whose families meet the income requirements, so low income is not an excuse for parents to use. They can't say, "can so-and-so have lunch this week, we don't have the money?" because they have a program for that. I would suggest (so that there is no confusion about whether or not your child is paid up) that you pay the bill for his lunches yourself and get a receipt. It is cheaper if you buy them in bulk instead of daily anyway, so go to the school (or if you live too far away, call, get the address, and send the money to the school) and pay for the lunches yourself. Many schools also have linked up to a special website that lets you know how much money your child has left in their account, and sends you an email when they are getting low on money. This way, you can keep track, you know your child is being fed, and you have a record of what is going on. You'll be able to see if your child is getting fed each day (as well as keep up on attendance at school) and bypassing the "middleman" (or ex). But, yes, in answer to your question, schools do not have to provide a lunch, just milk.

Yes, they can. Usually they don't. Every school has a free or reduced lunch program. All you have to do is apply for it. If a child receives food stamps through the state, the child automatically can get a free lunch. Another thing you can do is, just go to the school and ask if the child has money on thier lunch account (most school lunch programs have accounts for each child......like Sodexho) If you paying an extra 10 means this child eats, why not do it. Be a bigger person than the mom, she will learn from you and grow up too.

Most states offer a school lunch program for children without the funds for pay for lunch. The catch, the parent MUST request information and provide the proper paperwork and proof of low income.
If a child is sent to school with no money for lunch a kind teacher will most likely not let the child go hungry by buying lunch from their own pocket, but we know that this is not how it should be.
If you want to be sure your child has the money for lunch and it is not spent on something else, simply go to the school and purchase a pre-paid lunch ticket for the week (some schools offer pre-paid by the month and even the school year). But for heaven't sake, don't let your issues with your ex prevent your child from getting lunch. It is your and your ex's responsibility to provide that care for that child.

If she is unable to pay for lunch, she needs to apply for the free lunch program. It is availible in most schools. In my school, if you forgot your lunch money, and weren't in the free lunch program, they gave you a peanut butter sandwich and water. Contact your child's school and ask them what thier policy is.
Perhaps you need to go back to court and ask the judge to make her pay the bill. If you are paying child support, there is no reason that she cannot pay for the child's lunch unless there are a lot of medical bills.
If you find out that the school will refuse your child lunch if the bill is not payed and going to court is not an option, you should pay the bill yourself. It's not fair and is allowing her to manipulate you to some degree, but you have to do what is best for the child. If you do pay it, ask for credit on your child support payments from the court. I'm sure you can get a reciept from the school.

No. They should provide a minimum of a pb&j sandwich and water at least! Most school have a free and reduced lunch anyways so they receive monies for "free" lunches. It will be the parents' reponsbility to pay the bill, though!

I dont think the school can refuse to give food to a child but at the beginning of the school year I think there is a form to fill out saying your yearly wages and if its below a certain number the state provides the lunch free.

the school will not refuse the child lunch, i think it is illegal to do so, if the school knows of the child's situation. every schools has a free lunch program for underprivileged children, the government gives them the funds to provide those kids breakfast and lunch. contact the teacher or the office at the school to find out what needs to be done.

In our school, when you are negative $8, they will give the child a plain cheese sandwich and a glass of water. I don't think they would ever let a child go hungry, but it would be very upsetting for the child when everyone sitting around them has something good to eat.

In our local district, if you fail to pay the child's lunch bill, they substitute a peanut butter sandwich and fruit slices with a carton of milk for the normal daily lunch, which is okay except for the fact that the embarrassment for the child, because all of his/her peers knows why they have something different, and kids can be mean.
