1) Strive for Nirvana/Nibbana, then
2) help others to perfect themselves or be a better person.
They who are striving for Nirvana/Nibbana will certainly try to be as harmless as possible to others. They also will cultivate universal love, compassion, joy for others' gains, and balance of mind, so they will try and help others if they can but won't be disturbed if there's nothing that can be done. They can be a role model and motivate other people to behave like them too.
When they become enlightened, they can help others do the same by showing the way or clear any doubts about the way to enlightenment. Others around them will also be benefitted because they are harmless and full of kindness.
I think this is the best way to bring great benefit to myself and others. But I also think that the "world's problem" will still be around, although much less, coz there will be people who cannot be taught until the right conditions arise for them to be able to be taught. But then again, look at the positive sides rather than the negatives, coz the ones that u pay attention to will be the ones that are nurtured.

First....purify ones mind..through:MORALITY,MENTAL CULTURE AND WISDOM.
A person must first develop morality, that is his or her actions should bring good to other living beings. One does this by faithfully adhering to the precepts of abstaining from killing, slandering, becoming intoxicated or being lustful. As one develops one's morality, the mind will become more easily controlled, enabling one to develop one's powers of concentration. Finally, with the development of concentration, wisdom will arise!
