Some of these suggestions may sound strange but if you think about them they will make sense. Some of these are not to take with him but are for his benefit during basic.

The best thing to give him is a phone card, a travel bag with personal hygiene items, writing material with envelopes and stamps, this includes post cards that already have the stamp on them so he can write a fast note and mail it to you or his family, Shoe cleaning kit. This is stuff he would not have to buy when he gets there so it gives him less stress time and to save on money and the most practical. He will not have to much time to read books or anything like that. Maybe a school notebook because he will have to attend class and study so that can go with the writing material

The laptops are very useful!
A gaming system like xbox or playstation or games if he already has one.
A good watch thats waterproof
A Leatherman(multipurpose tool)
His best best will be to have a cell phone, so I wouldn't get calling cards.
Ipod or MP3 player
DVD's and/or a nice case or bag for them
Of course he can't use the stuff till after basic but these are things that make life in the barracks a little better!

a gym membership! seriously, basic will be a lot easier if he's in shape. he needs to make sure that he can do better than just the minimum. a psp would be nice b/c its small and he'll have something to do if he's on tdy or an ipod with a video screen. lots of pictures and phonecards. He won't be allowed to bring anything that's not on the list when he goes to basic. They'll take it away if he does.

Phone cards, definitely. Anything else will have to wait at home for him until after he gets out of basic.

A promise to write at least once a week. Mail from loved ones is valued much more than object.
Tell you brother he has our support. We may not support the war but we certainly support the troops.

good running shoes. The shoes they make him buy will be crap. In order to use them at basic, he has to say that they made him buy shoes that are too big, which probably won't be a lie. Make sure they're generally white.

phone cards are always nice. If he ends up in a place where it's hard to reach you guys, a phone card can really come in handy.
