Is this a bad thing. I was infected with one virus which was removed. Also I used RegistryMechanic, but the problem was present before I used it.

The best way to clean the virus is to operate your system from a bootable CD. Then run latest dos based antivirus and then completely scan your harddisk.
Obviously Virus leave a copy in RAM. So when you try to run any file, it goes to RAM so it corrupts that copy 2.
So try the step above.
try typing "regedit" in command prompt if it not works restart your computer in safe mode.

You might find a few more functions of your OS impaired, Sir; like System Restore and Search.

If that's happened, the best remedy is to reinstall XP, Sir.

This happens sometimes....a working solution is to type in "regedit32" instead of just regedit.
