The nitrogen cycle is defined as the continuous circulation of atmospheric Nitrogen among the soil, water, air & living organisms & then back to the atmosphere. The Nitrogen is a vital part of many essencial organic compounds. It forms a major part of atmosphere in the form of gas.It cannot be used by plants & animals directly.
Nitrogen is obtained from Nitrates & Ammonium Salts in the soil by the plants to buildup proteins from the plants.
CYCLE:
Some of the Oxygen & Nitrogen in the air is converted into Oxide of Nitrogen by the high temperature of lightening during thunder storms. The Oxides of Nitrogen dissolve in rain water , reach the soil & get converted into Nitrates. Then , the plants obtain their Nitrogen.
The Ntrogen fixing bacteria can utilize atmospheric nitrogen & build up nitrates from it. Some of these bacteria live freely in soil, others live in small knots or nodules on the roots of certain plants.
Nitrogen fixation by bacteria,i.e; the process of putting Nitrogen in a form that plants can absorb , compared with the rate at which plants need Nitrogen. Further, Nitrgen enters the food web through plants & passes on to animals which feed on them.
Then , during excretion nitrogeous wastes in the form of various Ammonium Compounds are returned to the soil or water .Nitrogen trapped in plants & animals returns to soil by seath & subsequently decay of their bodies by the action of bacteria & fungi.

the nitrogen cycle in generic terms is the process of conversion of nitrogen gas into ammonia when it comes in contact with organic matter and water and then breakdown of the ammonia so produced by bacteria that arise in the medium due to high concentration of ammonia.

eg - when you have a new aquarium you first put in a few fish the fish produce waste that gets converted into ammonia in the water - this gives what is called an ammonia spike in the water - if there are too many fish they will die( which is why you always start with a very few fish ) - however soon because of this high concentration of ammonia there arise a special bacteria in the filter of your aquarium - these bacteria feed on the ammonia and keep the concentration of ammonia low so that the fish can survive in a mature stable tank.

also the process of fixation of nitrogen into protein in the roots of legumes - but that is a different story

" Nitrogen cycle " is the chemical process caused by biological and chemical process. In Biology it is caused by nitrogen fixation by the Bacteria and otehr one is caused by thunder. In the first process( biological) Some Bacteria like in Curd and algae like blue green algae etc... consumes subsances having nitrates etc.. In course of Consumption nitrates decompose and the nitrogen is released in to the weather. Due to its tri bond Nitrogen is not easy seperated into nitrogen particles. When thunder happens , nitrogen at it its high voltage caused by thunder... decomposes and mixes with water.. and is annexted into the earth.. again becoming the food for the Bio organisms. This happens in cylcic manner and the nitrogen is fixed.... All this process is called Nitrogen cycle . This proess is carried both by Biological and Photo chemical means. Thank you for assining me to answer this question...
