I am fed up with being stuck in traffic on my way home at night, I have to leave Harlow (some would say this is a good thing) at around 17.00. I’m not great with maps at the best of times that’s why I give them to my wife, yes you herd correct my wife is a much better navigator. But she’s not with me on the drive home. What I am looking for is a SATNAV system which also does live updates of the traffic flow; I also need to know if they will do it on a town rather than motorway level. So any recommendations would be gratefully received. I would also like to be able to use it in Europe with no extra upgrades.

Go for a Garmin!
I use a GPS 5,hooked up to my laptop(Along with My FM Transceiver-which allows My Colleagues to follow my Footprint wherever I go)-and it works just fine!
Remember to update your Map Source(This will allow for New Roads and Layouts).
Also Consider a Mains Adapter for your Car as well as an External Antenna(To Improve your Signal Reception when Locking onto satellites).
Ebay has some great 3rd party External Antennas for not much money.

I've got two sat navs, a navman & a magellan, both bought used off Ebay for less than £25 each, both work fine in the UK & Europe. A friend went to Halfords last week & bought one 'on offer' for £150 - nice big screen, but does nothing that mine won't!

Buy the Tom Tom 700 it's brilliant for UK and Europe inc, bluetooth, points of interest, plenty of different voice options, but a word of warning, do not select any female voices or you will become lost!!!!

Just a word of caution...whichever one you end up getting, be extremely careful driving in France if it is one which has a speed camera detector incorporated in it,....they are illegal in France, and you can, and will, be prosecuted for possessing one if you are stopped, even if you are not using it at the time!
