Serum glutamic pyruvate transaminase is an enzyme in liver cells that facilitates creation of pyruvate as a source of energy in temporarily dysfunctional liver cells. Thus SGPT is elevated in infective hepatitis. After the liver cells recover spontaneously from infection SGPT levels become normal. There is no medicine to reduce SGPT levels. SGPT elevation is a result not a cause of liver disease.

This is not a liver enzyme. It is a muscle enzyme secreted by the liver. For diagnosis of liver disease other tests are necessary. Alcohol intake will raise this enzyme temporarily.
