of course you need to check out the laws including nonprofit agency requirements; you may be able to ask other shelters for their advice b/f undertaking this to insure that if you do this, you do it right. Other shelters will be willing to help you b/c most are overcrowded so it won't be a competition issue; then you need to make sure that you do right by the animals, providing them hope for future; there are animal rescues online and they will be more than helpful to assist you; these rescues provide foster care, transport for the animals; take the dogs to the vet to correct and insure the good health of the animal no matter what; then they post the pictures; figure out the needs of the individual dog; foster so the dog can have some one on one and then put them up for adoption; they always need help in all areas; including transport of the animal sometimes through several states by several people who can assist to get the animal to its destination; the more you know the better your shelter animals will be; look at all options ; I would gain as much knowledge as possible before jumping in with both feet; meanwhile you can assist these rescues while you are gathering the resources and information for yours. The very best of luck to you and all the animals that you will help!!!!!

id love to be able to do this! Firstly i would make sure i had capital behind me for the initial outlay, or look into charity status and how you get it. Then you would need to find suitable buildings that can supply light, heat, water, with plenty of storage space and room for a run area while dogs living area is cleaned. I would also contact a local vet to see if they would be willing to be "attached" to the shelter. I would also think about doing an animal care course so that you can spot the signs of common illnesses such as kennel cough. You will need bedding, food, and proper systems to record each dog as they come in and leave, as well as a vetting system for potential rehomers.
Really hope this helps, dont be put off, go for it, however hard it might get, it will be so worth it!

Lots of time, money, large properly equipped kennels, Knowledge of a dogs medical, nutritional, physical and behavioral needs, a vet on retainer, large amounts and constant source of quality dog food, the ability to deal with constant sadness due to others ignorance, a quality staff you can depend on but, most of all a true deep seated love for the animal. Don't let this discourage you though...Even if you cant do that, you can always volunteer. It not only helps the dogs but, is good for your heart. I've been a volunteer for more than 40yrs.

JUST a dog shelter? Not like, an all animal shelter? If you love dogs, you must surely love all animals right? lol

Good for you. Remember it is a 24/7 job. No vacations. Lots of expense, for all the above reasons. It is ultimately worth the time and effort. Don't be discouraged from your goal. I have a cat sanctuary, sometimes I feel alittle overwhelmed then again there are rewards that you can't measure. Good luck.

first thing is to check with the municipal area that you live in and see what laws and requirements they have regarding animal shelters. Good luck!
