This depends what sort of .dll file it is. In most of the cases some programs might not work properly, in some cases it will display the error msg. In some cases it might even freeze the PC or windows might also crash down. Therefore unless you say what .dll file is missing it is very difficult to say exactly what will happen

Certain applications that access the deleted .dll file will not work properly or will pop up errors. You will have to copy the deleted .dll file to the specifeid location from where it was deleted and you might have to register it too. To register a .dll file e.g abc.dll, to reigister it follow the undermentioned instructions:-
Click Start -> Click Run
Type regsvr32 (path of abc.dll file) e.g.
regsvr32 C:\WIndows\System32\abc.dll
Press OK.
This register the .dll file to the registry.

depends on which dll.

The library could be really important like windows core system file or it could be something you'll never use.

If you're using XP try restore, that's sorts most things. Otherwise, previous versions I think come with a repair option.

If you know the filename/location you can search for it on the Internet or try taking it direct from you Windows installation CD.

In computer science, a Dynamic Library, also referred to as a Dynamically-Linked Library, is a computer library that implements the concept of dynamic linking. This term is often shortened to DLL.

In Microsoft Windows, linking to dynamic libraries is usually handled by linking to an import library when building or linking to create an executable file. The created executable then contains an import address table (IAT) to which all dll function calls are referenced to (each referenced dll function contains its own entry in the IAT). At run-time, the IAT is filled with appropriate addresses that point directly to a function in the separately-loaded dll.

Like static libraries, import libraries for dll's are noted by the .lib file extension. For example, kernel32.dll, the primary dynamic library for Windows' base functions such as file creation and memory management, is linked to via kernel32.lib.

As functions in static libraries can reference other static library functions, dynamic libraries can reference functions in other dynamic libraries.
