you can check the temperture online at any time, it would be more convenient that way. It's about high 40s and low 30s F (high 10 low 0 C) for the next week or so. It's dry cold, hardly snow or rain. The best item to buy is a hard question, Beijing is really turned international, it has lost a lot of its flavors, I guess the best item to buy is actually the food. Things have gotten expansive. Things like antique you should avoid, unless you have good connections, and knows the right place to buy them, because they may very well be fakes. Clothes on the other hand are extremely cheap in China, so that counts as an item you can buy. If you are traveling in the winter, it is best to just take a taxi go from place to place and gather things that you like. If you are not in a place with a central register (like supermarket or upscale stores), please haggle with them, some place demand high prices, but the stuff are really just worth a third or sometimes a fifth of the price they demand. Vegetarian food can be found in supermarkets, they are most likely packaged and tofu oriented. Or go to resturants and ask for a waiter who can speak english to look at the menu with you. Avoid eating raw food in Beijing, (vegies too) best advice.
