Memetics, mostly. Religions employ fear, and have been naturally selected to do so in the meme pool, which has helped them to survive.

The second biggest reason is indoctrination of children. "Get 'em while they're young and won't know any differently" way of doing things.

Beyond that, there is a vast body of MISinformation about science (particularly evolution) that clouds the progress of those who do dare to question their religion. Sites like "Answers in Genesis," and books like, "The Case for Christ," deal in intellectual dishonesty and bad science.

And, unfortunately, without having been exposed to principles of rational thought or logic, most people that read such things and accept them without checking the facts.

The first sign a species is becoming sentient is when they have evolved to the point where they can abstract enough to invent a god. The first time a species achieves sentient maturity is when they get rid of their gods. Some of us have made this leap to rationality and, unfortunately, many never will, which may doom Humanity in the end.

I think people feel comforted by their religion and it makes them feel important - they think 'there's an all-powerful God out there and he knows and cares lil ol me exists'. That's part of the reason why they hate the whole evolution thing.

i think it is because its the easiest thing to do. people have a hard time understanding that we are all alone on this planet. bad things happen everyday, and people just need that little bit of comfort..thinking it must be part of gods plan, and people use their faith as a way to cope when things happen.
