Here is the latest news which may help you select a budget camera for your need. The reason why Nikon D40 has created so much interest is that most professional photographers have been using Nikon D50.

“Nikon Announces New D40 SLR
Nikon adds an appealing budget SLR to their stable of popular professional-level cameras.

The Nikon D40 hasn't officially been announced, per se, but a de facto announcement has come via Internet rumors and leaks on various photography sites, specifically a German retailer that mysteriously posted information about the phantom camera.

What we can tell you about the D40 is that it is going to replace the existing D50 d SLR (and further devalue the concept of model numbers as an indicator of forward progress). Supposedly, the D40 will have a 6 megapixel sensor and the body only model will cost you about $500.

Digital Camera HQ will keep you informed about the latest developments with the Nikon D40. Stay tuned to our Nikon D40 Product Page, where you'll find specifications, opinions, and the best prices as soon as the camera is available.

Bargain hunters will want to keep a close eye on the Nikon D50, as the price will surely plummet with the official announcement of the D40.”

After further research, I have found that Canon IXUS 900 Ti is also a good option.

You can get full details of this model from the following web page which says,

it “is a fully automatic camera, it still offers the creative photographer several options to make a fully personalised composition. The My Color mode, for instance, offers a fun option to experiment with a variety of digital effects in a simple and straight-forward way. In fact, you do not need any know-how on the topic of image editing to get started.”

I pretty much use my Canon digital camera as a scanner...just take a picture of the painting using the camera.

Only thing you have to worry about is getting the lighting right, since using the flash on the camera could cause flaring on the pictures you take.

I have "scanned" pictures, pages of text, and even TV screens with my camera. I then upload it via the USB port through the Canon ZoomBrowser software and then bring the picture into Paint, Photoshop, or the text into an OCR package.
