The symptom of TB are a persistent cough, night sweats, weight loss and pale skin/pallor. Many people are exposed to TB, but never develop active TB. If your chest x-ray is clear at this time, then follow the Dr's orders. If you develop syptoms or you have a positive chest x-ray, or the Dr feels you need the medicine, you must follow the treatment exactly. There really doesn't need to be more tests than the mantoux and a chest x-ray to determine if you need treatment. TB is highly treatable if you comply with the medical orders. Good Luck.

Signs of TB include cough, pain in the chest both front and back, fever of lowgrade but may be high, weakness, weight loss is typical in all, and others depending on system effected. Montoux diameter of 15mm is surely a positive sign of TB in otherwise normal person but it may be 10-14mm if person is diabetic or alcoholic. ESR is definetly raised in TB. I think you should perform a sputum smear test with Zeil Neelson stain to confirm presence of TB or a sputum culture test but culture takes 6-8 weeks for results to come. In patients with signs of TB, we don't hesitate to start drug therapy with Isoniazid and Rifampicin and pyrazinamide. Therapy is of 6 months duration. Doses are given: Isoniazid=15mg/kg/day IM (initial 6 months), Rifampin=500mg daily orally (initial 6 months), Pyrazinamide=30mg/kg/day (initial 2 months).

If you have cough with sputum, your sputum can be tested for Gram staining AFB (TB bacillus) staining, culture and sensitivity. If BACTEC culture is done for TB, you can get the result in 10 to 14 days. PCR can also be done. If a lymph gland is large and easily reachable, fine needle or excision biopsy can be done on it.
