i got a t.v from a friend and somthing must of happend to it is there any thing i can do with out calling a repair guy?
well now the picture on one half is discolored.. like a magnet is being held up to it

You need to get the monitor/TV set degaussed.
You can buy degaussing wands for them, either that or you can simply try turning it off then back on again, sometimes works, but best getting it degaussed.

TV degaussers used to be common; I got one from Radio Shack long ago. This one seems to be the only one out there now -- probably because everything is going plasma, LCD, and projection.
Go for the service call -- it might be real cheap for the degauss and you probably won't need it again before you switch to HDTV in 2009.

you might have a speaker too close to it.
otherwise, it is unlikely that it would be worth attempting to repair it.

sounds like your automatic de gauser is not working when you turn it on.
