Water retention, kidney or heart problems, or something as simple as being in a very hot climate

The reason your ankles swell is due to poor circulation. Yes, you can be retaining fluid due to many factors such as kidney problems, pregnancy or even being on your feet to long. The reason you see the swelling in your ankles the most often and first is because they are the furthest from your heart. Your feet will be swollen too, but it shows more in the ankles. Getting off your feet and elevating them helps. Unless you have congestive heart failure, you should drink alot of water. It seems counterintuitive, but it will actually help you flush your system.

Usually from too much sodium, excess water or too much exercise. If this is a constant condition, I would suggest to check with your doctor about it. More than occassional swelling should be checked.
