Or do they go because they have to or for other reasons such as personal glory?

I have been in the military for 21 years. I love my country and would defend it to the death, but when I "go off to war", I would say I am more passionate about my brothers and sisters serving with me. I don't really think about the political side of things. I just want my people and myself to come back alive and in one piece.

There are many factors that affect how someone views war and the list is large, but when the bullets start flying I would bet most soldiers don't think of country, glory, or the reasons they are there, but the basics like survival.

I will put more in later. Got to go help the wife with Thanksgiving stuff.

Why would anyone voluntarilly join the military and not want to defend their country.

Use alittle common sense here.

Personal glory? In the military there is nothing personal. Everything you learn and accomplish is done as a unit along side other soldiers. There is no room in the military for personal glory.

Every person who goes to war goes by their own personal route. Because of this, the military attempts to find some 'common ground' in an attempt to help cement the bonding process, which is the true motivator when battle comes. Because of this, alot of the military is based around ideas: duty, honor, patriotism, glory, free beer, whatnot. No one 'fights' for their country in a battle, they fight to survive, and the end result, hopefully, is that their country is better for it.

For the most part, yes. At least the American ones do.

There is no glory in war. People in the military have all sorts of reasons for enlisting. All of them are very patriotic. Those who don't feel like their peers soon figure out they don't belong.

I am glad we have people who are willing to fight for our freedoms.

I was in the military in my country. Some go because they are crazy and want to prove something. Some go because they are poor and this was their best chance. Some go because they are lonely and don't know what else to do. A few saints who are idealists go and they often are the first to get killed.

No they dont. Although I would believe American soldiers are more likely to simply because they are more brainwashed there with waves of patriotism that dont mean jack when a leaded bullet is penetrating their ribcage.
