I would carpet the lounge half and lay wooden floor at the dining end, it's easier to clean dropped food from a wooden floor.

Either Wooden Floor or Cream Carpet

I'd go for the wooden floor and, if you fancy it, a nice rug. We had a nasty blue carpet and the other half wouldn't go for a wooden floor moaning 'they're too cold'. I didn't want another dark coloured carpet and we ended up with a cream carpet, HUGE mistake! (especially with 2 kids, a dog and a cat - it gets filthy, even with the no shoes rule). I wish I had gone for the wooden floor!

I would go with wooden floors or maybe one of the wood look alike laminates, etc. Easier to keep clean, a neutral color that means you can change other colors in the room without having to replace carpet. Also, stains and spills are easier to clean up off of a floor than off carpet.

Go for a neutral shaded carpet. I have a woodon floor and it really needs to be cleaned every day. It can get damaged by heels and chair legs. I have sticky felt pads on the bottom of my chair legs but they collect dust and can also leave sticky marks on the floor. Also, wooden floors are cold - not nice on bare feet in the winter.

Definitely wooden floor, of those two options. Think about everyday cleaning and what any kind of carpet would be like -- yuck. Wooden floors would be easier to clean by far.

In the hospitality business - we actually prefer hard wood floors or Italian Natural stone tiles (with underfloor heating - it is a reasonable costs and if connected to central heating system not too much of added cost) - the main reason is that it gives the impression of cleanliness & sophistication - by the way carpet where you eat - No No - it stains and looks awful within a short period of time.

New carpet, easer to maintain than a wood floor. Chairs and tables being constantly shifted are gonna ruin a wood floor.

carpet

got wooden floors - they are cold and they are forever collecting dust and stuff. Its a lot easier to hoover the carpet and it doesn't show as much. Plus i got stilletto heel marks all over my wooden floor that i broke my back for :(

We have a large through lounge and have wood flooring throughout. I find it to be a lot easier to clean, being that we have to young children and a dog who constantly run around like crazy!

Think it depends on your personal circumstances
