My cat talks to me, really. She is 11 years old and I got her when she was just 5 weeks old. I literally raised her, she saw we finish two schools and university, she sleeps with me every night! When I come into my room, she will say "Ma!", never with anyone else. If I ask her "You want some?" she replies "Aaaa" very excitedly. If I say "come along, come along" she gets up immediately with a loud "mmmmaaaaaa" and runs after me like a puppy. If the door is closed and she is locked out, she will scream an anxious "MAAAAAA!" and then bang on the door with her paws until I open. Sometimes I will ask her "You like?" and point to a new dress or object, and she'll either answer with a "ja" and stroke against it, or pull back her ears and show a disgusted face.

Sometimes I hear a distinct 'mama' and she only talks to me like that. There are distinct differences when she responds to my parents and sister. People are always amazed when they hear her. What are your experiences?

Being the owner of many cats I have one that is especially vocal. Her name is Jojo. . When I tell her "You look so pretty" She squints her eyes and looks all sweet and make a high pitch purring noise. She also treat me like a kitten! She jumps up on my office chair when I'm on the net and kisses me. If I try to move forward she grabs me gently with her paws and continues to lavish me with kisses. It's like she's saying "i'm not done bathing you yet!" I tend to pick her up and cradle her like a baby and she loves it. She immediately starts a high pitch purring that she did with her kittens. When I lie on the couch she jumps up on me and buries her head under my chin and purrs sweetly. She has also tried nursing from me! lol, she kneads my chest with her paws and sucks on my shirt, an effect of being taken away from mama cat too early. She is small but very fiesty. I have 2 100 pound malamute wolfdogs and she bosses them around like nothing. I thought you'd like to see my crew. I have 4 cats including 6 toed polydactyl cats and two blue eyed wolfdogs.
Here is a link of pictures of my babies - Enjoy!

OH MY GOD - I thought I was the only one. My cat also is so vocal - is yours an Asian breed?? I heard Asian breeds talk more. Mine is a Singapura and is so chatty. Whenever I speak she speaks back. When I come home from work I have her in the bedroom and I will hear the MRARRRRRR to let me know she has heard me and I must go to her. When I call her name she talks back - when I ask what are you doing when she's all into a new toy she will look up and say MAAA and get back to it. She talks to me constantly - when I'm on the phone and tell her say hi to the person on the phone she always responds and people get a kick out of it or if I have guests and they watch us have a conversation they just laugh. I thought I was the only one - I guess we're blessed with special cats - I love it - I hope you do as well. She also follows me like a dog - I call her my little puppy cat and plays fetch with a ball as well!!!

I once had a cat that (I swear) would say "want out" at the door. It sounded like waa-ow... but it's the only time she said that, was at the door.
We now have 2 young cats, and the baby one "talks" all the time, it's just a half purr/ half meow, sounds like "errmer" but it's sweet.
And the other one has this strange habit of drinking her water with her paws, dips the hand in then llicks the water off. She also drinks cofee & tea the same way (if we forget to pick up the cup) She loves coffee!

Yes - we have very similar experinces. My cat has different noises for hello - a meeeeeeeeew, when she wants out, more of a howl and when she's annoyed - if u get up and shove her off the bed i get a short sharp MEP! Our cat also has different noises for different toys she plays with. Each toy has its own sound and we can tell when she's coming in from next door which toy she will have in her mouth. This amazes visitors as we can tell which toy will appear next!

My kitten is nearly 6mths, and while I wouldn't say she 'talks' to me, she definately communicates with me, and shows a difference in feeling for other people. She spends far more time with me than my fiance, and would always come to me first and miaows at me more- probably cos he knows he'll get a better reaction from me! But he doesn't even have to miaow to make his feelings known, there;s something about his body language and the look in his eyes that tells me everything I need to know...

I love the sound of your cat, she sounds amazing.

My kitten likes to chat when I get home from work, I ask him questions and he replies. I'm not sure it makes all that much sense, but we both enjoy it. He also makes a noise that sounds like "now" when you're getting his food ready and a sort of "mmwwaa" like a kissing noise when he jumps on your lap.

I can't wait until he is properly chatting away like yours.

never mind these other two ahead of me telling you you are off the wall. I have had three cats and they all get into their own little way of letting you know what they want and two of these guys were very vocal and continuously gave sounds that resembled words to us as a family. And when I said to this one in particular to go get mum he would sound like he said mum and took off looking for her and this was constant and very amusing to all who came to visit us too as they did not believe it until they seen it themselves. Also they got into habit of going every night to all the bedrooms to check on us and the 3 children before going to their spot to sleep, just like our dog did too.

Cat's do communicate this way. They tend to have two vocabularies, the more complex one is used with other cats ('high cat') and the simpler one with other species ('low cat'), including us. If you've had a her from a kitten it's possible she has included you among those with whom she speaks high cat.

I think cats do talk to you and the more you talk to them the more they respond. Some cats are not terribly vocal but all cats can make themselves heard!! One of my cats talks the other is wild and purrs usually
