Brazil nuts grow on very old and high trees, so they are not
naturally cultivated. The nuts are picked off the ground and
taken to a preparation plant, here they have special machines
to crack them open without breaking the nut itself. Then they
are lightly roasted, packed and sent to the market. Sometimes
they are polished and that is when they have a light colouring.
Some are not polished and have a natural thin brown skin,
which sometimes is mistaken as being the shell. They are
highly nourishing and, although can be picked off the ground
in the greater Amazon rainforrests, the demand by the export
market has sent the prices sky high, even in Brazil.

Brazil is the only country to export the nuts still in their shells.
The European Commission has branded the nuts a health risk after traces of a toxin that can cause liver cancer were found in Brazil nut shells.
I will have a look today. I have seen Walnuts in shells in ASDA but I haven't seen the range of nuts you used to be able to buy for years.

You might get them in a local health food shop although it isn't really the time at the moment. Halloween is the time when most of the brazil nuts are out.

Its sad we all think supermarkets are the be-all and end-all of shopping for food.
There are a ton of farmshops that sell brazil nuts in thier shells, we have them all the time.

The reason you can't buy them in the shops is because you need a pile-driver to get into them. They have defeated most of my nut-crackers. Better let someone else do the opening.

give 10 points to Keef20032...!! They've been really hard to get for a few years now which is a right pain as they're my favourite!
Never mind - at least that's one type of cancer avoided.
