If it is a traditional rich fruit cake properly sealed and kept in cool temperature it should last for a year, just right for the first christening cake according to my first mother in law (in my case the wait was actually 15 years!)

A fruit cake will keep for a couple of years, but it will need re-icing after about a year. You can also put it in the freezer.

There is a tradition that says you should keep the top of your wedding cake for the Christening of your first child.

We were never going to get our kids Christened, so served the it at our 1st anniversary party.

It will start to go bad in a couple weeks. It needs to be kept in an airtight container to keep it from drying out.

I wouldn't freeze it for various reasons. Most brides on the Knot and Wedding Channel said they just got a fresh anniversary cake that the baker included for free. But the few who did freeze their cakes for a year threw it out after one bite.

The cake itself will keep for a long time - but whether the icing will is a different matter.

Kept one tier of my wedding cake for four years and it became a christening cake at first borns christening

We were married in 1976. My sons were born in 1981. The top tier of our wedding cake was used at their Christening party that year. To be honest, I can't remember what it tasted like, but nobody complained, left their portion, or died from eating it (!), so I would assume that it was fine.
I do remember that the wedding icing had gone slightly yellow, so my mum had it removed and re-iced.

Shelf life varies from cake to cake, but traditional wedding cake (fruitcake) can be made 12 months ahead of serving time, and keeps well for years.

PLEASE NOTE:
*With no preservatives - Cake keeps for up to 6 months (after 4 months put in fridge)

*With preservatives - Cake basically keeps indefinitely (Store in an airtight tin or plastic container, and douse with additional rum for every 4 weeks of storage).

Ours was a traditional fruit cake iced with marzipan and royal icing. The top tier was kept in an air-tight tin and when our first child was born on our fourth wedding anniversary we used it as a christening cake. Of course we removed the icing and marzipan and had it re-iced. It was delicious and at the time of eating five years old.

I think getting some sort of holder could end up being very expensive if you are getting one for each rose. You can ask the florist you get the roses from for further details (if they're poisonous, proper way to put them into the cake, etc.), just let them know you're using them for your cake. If you're really concerned, wrapping the stems in florist's tape (available at craft stores) should suffice. Congratulations!

When we got married my mom made our fruit cake to have on our anniversary of 25 years and we just celebrated our 25th with our original fruit cake. I just cut off the marzipan and it was amazing after 25 years!
