I'm about to fork out hard cash for a registry cleaner, but thought I should check with you guys first.
I've had this 2nd-hand PC for a month now, and pctools.com reckon Wndows 2000Pro has 158 registry errors they can fix if I buy their Cleaner.
What is it for? Is it a con?
Will it do any good?
Will it fix my frequent "Cannot find server" problem (and if not, how do I fix that, please)?
Thanks folks.

Don't buy it! Most registry software that come 'free' only fix the less harmful problems. In that sense, CCleaner is the best one around. It cleans out unnecessary stuff, fixes Registry issues and comes with a whole host of helpful tools. And it's free. You don't need to buy anything to use this wonderful tool. Advanced Windows Care is another excellent all-in-one tool. Other products like Registry Mechanic just detect problems and don't fix most of them. Most 'free' programs create false positives in order to dupe you into buying their product.
As for "Cannot find server", you can:
Switch from IE to Firefox
Switch from dial-up to Broadband

There are many free cleaners, I recommend CCleaner. Yes they are good, they clean out the clutter that slows down your machine. When a computer starts it checks the registry trying to track down everything, even wasting time looking for invalid entries of programs you removed. CCleaner does it all without you having to be a computer wizard. The bad point of some cleaners is you can manually delete entries without knowing what they really do, and maybe you're computer won't start up, ouch. CCleaner is safe, you don't have to worry. Also another free program that does it all is Advanced Windows Care. Best of luck.

I've tried a few Reg cleaners and some have crippled the systems I ran them on. So be careful.
Having said that I am currently using a great tool. Its called Advanced System Cleaner and has a minimal cost. A very good product!

Registry Cleaner really do help. Is it not necessary to fork out any money though. There are many free ones that are awesome. Try RegScrubXP, if you are using xp, you can download it at http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=2048. Another one that has never caused me any issues is EZCleaner. You can download that one at http://www.download.com/EasyCleaner/3000-2086_4-10260470.html
You will also want to defrag you system after cleaning it to get it back in order. To defrag you can use the one built into windows.
Start>all programs>accessories>system tools>click on disk defrag. Let it do its thing.
After that is done, and while you know where to find it, go ahead and do a disk cleanup. It is found by going to the same section as described above. These steps should speed up your system.
Good Luck

How I wish I'd read this question an hour ago - I have just purchased Drive cleaner for £40 and it hasn't done one bit of good so as has been said many times on here, do not waste hard earned cash on these things.

Yes Registery Cleaners do help .... but you dont have to buy them cos they dont help to the extent you empty your pockets on them.
Also you can find a crack for them easily and if you cannot find a crack, mail me, I'll give you a complete PC performance Booster with crack.

you can several articles and self help issues there they also can find you free software that will work just about as well as your pcworlds claims. They even run software test to see how good software is and place reviews to read about it on website.
