I wish I knew! I've tried washing my hands in lemon juice and it didn't work. I've tried rubbing stainless steel, they say that works, but not for me.
Time heals all things, and is the only thing I've found to eliminate onion smells.

Getting Onion Smell off Hands.-You know how to get the onion smell off your hands after chopping onions? If you have a stainless steel sink in your kitchen, rub your hands on the stainless steel sink or the stainless steel faucet. It will take the odor off your hands, then wash with soapy water. Yes, it really works!

To get rid of onion, pepper or garlic smells from hands, mix a ratio of two level tablespoons of baking soda to a glass of water and soak hands for 30 seconds to a minute. Also great for getting rid of these smells/burning from mouth (rinse, don't swallow!).

Good luck. Bye!

Wash them with soap and water. Then under the water, rub a spoon or anything stainless steel over them. It works...something about absorbing the oils off of your hands that brushed steel does.

I watched this on a cooking show probably 20 years ago, thing it was Wok with Yan. Anyways, garlic and onion smells can be eradicated from finger tips, or hands by rubbing them on a piece of screen. I went to my local hardware store and asked for the same type of screening used on the faucet tip. Works immediately. If you just need to do your finger tips, just rub them under the faucet tip on the screen.
Works every time!

My sister is a cook, and she says to run your hands over something metal like silverware, etc, while you are washing them. I don't know why it works, but it does.
