I suggest a cough syrup containing guifenisen and dextromethorphan; both these ingredients are available over the counter in cough syrups like Robitussin. Guifenisen helps loosen any congestion in your chest (be SURE to drink lots of water with it); dextromethorphan helps control that nagging tickle that makes you want to cough, so that you cough only when you actually NEED to do so. You can take an antihistimine like Benedryl (diphenhydramine HCL) to help you sleep, but I recommend against it; Benedry dries out the mucous membranes, and may slow your recovery by making it difficult for you to cough out the phlegm in your lungs. Hopefully once you quit coughing, you'll be able to sleep, so I'd take the Benedryl only as a last resort. Also stay away from caffeinated drinks since they constrict the blood vessels.

I would say an expectorant, but I don't know about mixing medicines. You are better off if you can call a pharmacist tonight and ask if you can take an OTC expectorant while taking an antibiotic. Get yourself a steam vaporizer to help loosen the congestion and sleep propped up. I find it more comfortable to put pillows under the head of my mattress, rather than trying to sleep on a bunch of pillows.

Mix up 1 part hot water (almost boiling, like you would use to make hot tea), 1 part lemon juice (bottled is ok, fresh is better), 1 part honey, and 1 part Souther Comfort. You'll sleep like a baby and won't cought all nighht. Now, if it's daytime and you have to drive or work or whatever, leave out the Southern Comfort, but be prepared to repeat the dose several times throughout the day. I like this better than those ikky pharmaceuiticals.

Best medicine ever for a chest cold is Musinex, you can buy it pretty much at any store that sells cold meds. It will lossen up all the gunk in your chest so you can get it out. Dayquil and NiteQuil will help you ease the pain and discomfort while you are getting better.
We all just got over chest colds here too

Nyquil will help you sleep. Try rubbing some vicks on your chest and drinking lots of fluids. Try an altoid or real strong breath mint. Try drinking some hot tea with lemon. Try a heating pad on your back. You could have someone pat you on the back in an up and down motion. Hope you feel better.
