I m in the same position as you,so I will tell u what I had researched on the net and by talking to people so far.
I m a toyota fan ,and I was waiting for the new camry 2007. but its base model has so many problems, that I had to think of other options. The new Sonata 2007 ,appears like a dark horse at this time ,with all its standard features,
10 yr warranty,
improved engine ,
quiet and spacious cabin,
good milage
17" alloy wheels
5 star safety testing
affordable sticker tag
everlasting exterior design
consumer ratings 9.4/10
plus a host of options that u can add to a base model

it was really hard for me to digest this initially but what else more you need from a car, if you put all these options in a camry or accord you can end up paying upto 2500$ more.also camry base you can add only ESC,thats it !

As for reliability issues, I m still keeping my fingers crossed as for the past two years since the car was launched ,no bdy has submitted any complaint.

Just under 20k ,I wud go for this car shortly !

A Saturn. I have a base model 2000 saturn SL that I bought for $4000 in 2003. I never have a problem with it, and when deer jump in front of my car (which happens too often) I can just take off a part and replace it. Basically it is a lego car. I have the base model with stick shift and no power steering, but I love how tight the steering is, and hate driving automatic cars. Pretty much any saturn is a good deal. They have some more sporty ones such as the SC series, but they tended to have more problems, coming from some people I knew that owned one.

Well, you didn't say where you live or how much you could afford, but my usual best advice is to find a decent used Toyota or Honda. Especially a Camry or an Accord.

Fuel efficient, room for 4, and will run forever if you have decent basic maintenance done.

Automotive Engineering in my forte, the cars that i highly recommend is either a honda accord or civic, they run forever if taken care of, i have a 1993 accord that has 300.000 miles and runs great no engine rebuild they a somewhat inexpensive and have a lot of guts!

you know, there was alot of dissing of this car, but I have had a 1997 Kia Sephia for almost 9 years, you can buy them on eBay for like $800, I have done work to mine, like cv's, water pump, and a rebuilt engine, but I got 125,000 miles on it, I have driven from az to ok more times than I can count, it has been a really good car, I only needed the engine cause I drove the hell out of it, doing like 1/4 mile runs and stuff, but, for the money, i would buy another....

Used automobiles may be something else, kinda like playing. in case you don't be attentive to the guy you're determining to purchase from , who is familiar with what you're turning out to be. once you circulate to purchase take a mechanic with you or ask in case you could take to get inspected..i've got bought 2 motorcycles from craigslist this previous 365 days and that i've got been given no hidden surprises yet the two situations I took a chum with me who knew alot greater approximately motorcycles than me and that i've got been given his opinion until now I gave out any money. growing to be up my dad had a used vehicle lot and that i wasn't constantly pleased with him. His objective became into to constantly get rid of the lemon of the lot first. If i became into you i might ask a chum to borrow a vehicle. If all else fails i might fly and final motel i might hire yet evaluate expenses of flying and renting , maintaining in innovations the mileage.

I don't know your price range, but any German or Japanese car would be reliable. I don't know your age group and weather you are looking for a 2 door or a 4 door.
