Some are evident before others, a good short term indication is if you have blisters popping out on your lips, warts forming on your private area, or having to scream while you pee!!! Others are more subtle, like slowly going blind, developing cancer or gradually dying? You should simply not have unprotected sex with people you're not positively certain of? But then that absolutely only leaves yourself, and from the question you're asking, just to be safe, maybe you should wear rubber gloves?

It depends on the STD. Some symptoms show up almost right away, and yet the syptoms of AIDS could take over a decade. Generally for testing they tell you that AIDS can show up positive as soon as two weeks, but most places reccomend getting retested at six months or a year. For donating blood, you need to wait a year after, for example, getting a tattoo, since then their tests will be able to find out if you got infected from that incident.

unfortuantely different STD's have different incubation periods. however you should get checked out if you've had unprotected sex ASAP if you have any symptoms or any reason to believe you may have one just to be on the safe side or to get a baseline examination. your local health dept is a good place to go as they track these things and keep records and can give the right treatment. please remember things like HIV may not show up for months after exposure so you need to always practice safe sex with an unknown partner!!
