First of all don't use salt on any foods, and then the BEST thing to do is go to a store where they specialize in herbs and natural remedies, and they usually can tell you what will work. I take flax seed oil, which is good for cholesterol, and blood pressure. Check though at a natural health food store. Also alcohol can raise your blood pressure as well. Try not to let things upset you, which is easy for me to say, but getting upset, just makes things worse. Take care.

throw away the salt shaker, (yes, the salt has to go with it) eat oatmeal every morning, and take L'arginine. its a suppliment found at any health food store. i know someone who had a problem with high blood pressure. he has been taking l'arginine for about 3 months now and his blood pressure has been perfectly normal every day when he takes his readings on it. he isnt taking anything else for it. dont forget to take it though because then it will go back up to where it wants to be. no excessive drinking or smoking, lose weight. eat more fresh veggies and less red meat. just generally decide to be healthy. its not easy to do but high blood pressure is a sign that its time to start living healthier. if you need someone to talk to i'm usually around. good luck!

1. lower you salt (sodium) intake to less than 2300 mg per day. 1500 mg per day is ideal.
2. Increase your intake of Omega-3 fatty acids (a good type of fat found in fish, flaxseed, walnuts, soybean and canola oils.
3. Lower you alcohol consumption
4. Stop smoking
5. Exercise
6. Control your weight
Also, when you check your BP, you should be relaxed and seated. Exercise and strenuous activity raise your systolic pressure transiently and is a normal physiologic response. If you have an automatic BP machine, take it to a doctors office and check it against a good manual cuff.
7. Beware of some of the answers I have seen in response to your Question. Laying on one side or another does not affect BP, it affects venous return when there is a large baby in the uterus.

The most obvious way is to reduce salt (specifically sodium) intake. Avoid canned soups and vegetables... heck, avoid soups altogether, they won't even taste good unless they're full of salt. =D Same with potatoes, but that's just my culinary preference.
Don't eat processed meat products like bacon, sausage, or prepared (breaded/fried/glazed) chicken.
A good way to control your sodium intake, I find, is to cook and prepare as much of your own food as possible (and limit eating out). This is easier than it seems. Contact me if you want hints.
If your blood pressure is still severely high, then you might just have a genetic tendency towards it... then you might want to speak with your doctor about taking a fairly benign medication to lower it. Otherwise you will eventually run the risk of stroke and/or aneurysm, which would be a Bad Thing(TM).
hope this helps, and get back to me if you want help on selecting some convenient foods...

less salt, and eat more fiber... Oatmeal (without loads of butter or cream) has been documented to lower pressure within 30 minutes of eating.. make some putting a little honey, or cinnamon with low fat milk on it..

when resting in laying position, favor your left side - this will help keep the pressure lowered and regulated - on side of your heart .... per a nurse while in hospital after birth of my daughter!

Limit your caffiene intake and cut out your salt. A lot of foods and drinks have salt and you may not realize it. Sodas are high in sodium.
