bromohexine
first the previous poster said that promethazine and codeine have no side effects! from that i deduce he knows nothing on the subject.
they have a long list of side effects , but thats not the question.
you must know that there are 2 main types of cough treatment:
1 cough sedatives for dry cough like from flu
2 expectorants for productive coughs like the ones smokers usually get.
the problem with antitussives (cough sedatives) is that they usually have a sedative effect on the whole body , not just the cough, in addition to a myriad of other side effects .
expectorants and mucolytic drugs work by facilitating the expulsion of phlegm (snot) so the coughs become milder and less frequent and distressing , but they do not do any sedation, they just help make the coughs easier and fewer.
bromohexine is an example of a mucolytic drug.
it has zero significant side effects because it just dissolves the mucous in the lungs.
you can take 2 8mg tablets 3 times a day safely.
HOWEVER
if you have a dry cough , a mucolytic drug would not help so you actually need a sedative antitussive.
i would recommend Tramadol 50 mg tablets , but they are not suitable for children , for whom Naloxone would be the best choice if you are concerned about side effects profiles.
(tramadol is not conventionally used for cough, but it has a wonderful cough suppressing effect with less side effects than other alternatives with same potency. it is more commonly known as a controlled painkiller)

that depends on what kind of cough . productive is one that makes the junk come out. dont try to stop this one its a good one .
non productive nothing comes up or what does is clear looks same a dripping wet nose in winter.
dry cough nothing at all comes up .
the last two can be looked after with all sorts of brands of cough meds. no one med is the best for all coughs or for all people
priour to buying a cough med talk to the pharmacist about it
tell them any medical condition you have any at all
tell them an alergy or bad reaction to a med before
tell them all meds your taking i mean all of them otc and script ones.
tell them if you have any allergy
then after all that the pharmacist will help you get the best cough med for you .
remember to do all of this or you can make matter much worse
also they drugs have side effects like sleepy feeling or even a drunk feeling do what it says on pack and dont drive or do anything that requires alertness or fast reactions until you have been on the med for a day or two and know how it affects you .

The cure is finding what you are allergic to and then giving it up. To handle your symptoms, Benadryl is excellent. You can get it OTC at WalMart, Walgreen's, etc.
