Some people say it contains pig fat, etc. Being orthodox veggie, I am scared to eat nowadays.

The plain ones are FINE! With the flavored ones it gets tricky, obviously the cheese ones have animal fat, the bacon flavored ones DO have pig fat etc.

A sneaky one is the salt&vinegar, it has dairy!

I am a former chef and one reason they cannot use animal fats (pork or beef) is they would go rancid in storage, I don't know exactly which oil they use in the US, but in Canada our Lay's are cooked in only pure sunflower oil.

Most manufacturers now use non hydrogenated fats like canola, safflower, sunflower or there are some gourmet chips cooked in Olive or Peanut oils.

Potato chips contain hydrogenated vegtable oil. If you are a vegetarian for religious reasons, they are OK. If you are doing it for your health, you'd be better off eating a steak.
