Diabetes and hypertension are otherwise called lifestyle diseases. By slight modifications in the lifestyle, one can reduce the impact of these diseases

The best possible way to reduce BP is to reduce salt by 50 per cent in the food. One should consume fresh poultry, fish, and lean meat instead of canned, smoked, or processed foods. Use spices instead of salt.
Avoid salt containing side dishes like chutneys, pappads, pickles and processed fish (karuvadu), one should restrict temptation to go for frozen dinners, mixed dishes such as pizza, packaged mixes, canned soups, and salad dressings, as the sodium content is more in these dishes
Aerobic exercises such as brisk walking, cycling, swimming and skipping can bring down the BP by about 4 to 9 mm of Hg. The recommended duration of exercise is around 30 to 45 minutes of brisk walking for at least three or five days a week. The exercise should be regular and sustained for achieving maximum benefit
