When you are hungry, your stomach starts to produce acid and other digestive juices. It thinks you are going to eat soon. If some of this is forced up into the esophagus, it can cause an uncomfortable (even painful) feeling in the chest, where somepeople associate with the heart. Your condition could be GERD, or gastrointestinal reflux disorder. Also known as reflux, or simply "heartburn". A quick way to check this is too take an antacid when this occurs. If that helps, than you probably do have reflux. There are over the counter remedies like Pepcid AC, which could help. If antacids do not help, then it could be something else.

I would go see a doctor anyway. If this has been occurring for sometime, the acids could be causing problems with the lining of your stomach or esophagus. This results in an ulcer. Do you have black tarry stools (bowel movements)? Do you often feel weak or out of energy? These are signs of a more serious complication (anemia) from a bleeding ulcer and should be treated immediately.

I hate to speculate because it might be a sign of low blood sugar, diabetes, or many other conditions. Please consult your doctor or alternative health practitioner. Good luck.
