Not too rare a disease. More of a symptom of other disorders.
You should ask the doctor who told you that you have it to discuss the causes and probable causes in your case. He owes it to you. Ask him what he would do if it were his daughter and what treatment or prevention he would recommend.
See the word Hyperkalemia on yahoo search. Go ahead and read several articles. won't hurt. Don't get too paranoid, though.
Could be kidneys, bad diet, too many pills, too much salt, or a bunch of hormonal disorders. Too much salt substitute with poor kidney function and diabetes.
ASK the doc.
