I think steak is the grossest.I remember how it took like 3 minutes to chew one bite, and people still eat it when its pink and all bloody. It is also gross how much fat comes off of meat when you cook it,like meatloef, there will be a 1/2" thick layer of fat at the bottom of the pan.Yuck! I make tamales with refried beans(no lard) and jalepenos. There actually really good.

There is *NO* lard in the tamales I make! No disgusting meat or other animal by-products either! FWIW, if you'd look around there *are* a few companies that make vegetarian and even vegan tamales.

Almost all authentic mexican food is made with lard... refried beans included.

If you don't ask for vegetarian beans (which are typically still whole, not mashed), you're eating lard.

I haven't had tamales... they sound too soft from what I've heard about them. I love enchiladas and chimichangas though (especially chimis). Just be sure to ask about the beans... at most mexi places, simply not having meat does NOT make it a vegetarian entree.

Lol!

Many are made with crisco instead of lard.

I make them regularly. Lard and all!
haah...I would say that it depends on where you ate them.
Out of a jar? Frozen? At a "mexican" restaurant?

I make them 2 ways...one is Jalisco style...they are in corn husks with pork in the middle, and the dough is fluffy.

The other way is with roasted chicken wings inside, and wrapped in banana leaves (veracruz or oaxaca style).

My husband is repulsed by the banana leaf tamales (he is from jalisco), but they are my favorite.

I can understand your feelings about tamales, especially the lard part. Many recipes call for 6 cups of lard. I use 1 cup for 40 tamales, so it isn't so bad. Lard makes me so sick. Crisco works too, but I don't feel much better using that either.

I have never cared for tamales. What really disgusts me is how Hostess puts animal fat in all of their confections. Now that is gross!!!!

forget the lard, real tamales are made with bacon fat (wich is essentially lard, but a whole lot tastier).

It is a personal taste. I am not fond of them, but then many of my friends are. All say prepare your own, and not use frozen. In the south west they are a staple of many and can be filled with beans or/and beef.

my feelings would probably be better if they weren't sold like drugs. "psst!....want some tamales?"
