Like Vegon says, you'd be better going to a dietician or nutrionist than a medical doctor for advice about your diet.

I did a quick search and found the website (eatright.org) of the American Dietetic Association which is the [US]'s largest organization of food and nutrition professionals.

Their opinion of vegetarian diets in general is: "It is the position of the American Dietetic Association and Dietitians of Canada that appropriately planned vegetarian diets are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases."

If you search in further detail, I'm sure you'll find useful information about meat alternatives.

Hi there

I think the general assumption is that meat substitutes are healthier than actual meat because they are lower in fat and calories, and not full of all the chemical nasties that they feed to factory farmed animals. They've also got some protein and vitamins.

Here's a couple of articles I found that discuss the health benefits

But as that 2nd one points out, you still need to read the packaging. Also, there's a lot of people who would tell you that having too much soy messed with your body, and isn't a good idea. Also some people become allergic to some of the ingredients in Quorn, so that's a couple things to watch out for.

I'm not sure if you're investigating meat substitutes as an alternative to meat, or if you've already stopped eating meat and you want to incorporate them into your diet. I think if it's the former it's safe to say that this would be the healthier way to go. real meat has all kinds of crap in it too, plus more fat and calories.

But if you're already a veggie, then it depends what you eat now and what the fake meat is going to be taking the place of in your current diet. Meat substitutes are still processed foods, containing aritificial ingredients, so they're not going to be the healthiest choice. Fresh fruits, vegetables, lentils, pulses etc will always be a better idea if you can survive alright on that stuff. But if that's not the case, and you're already eating a lot of pasta, bread etc and you're looking to get out of that rut, then fake meat would be a good way of expanding your options because it's certainly no worse than any other processed stuff.

No direct answer, sorry, because i've never sought a doctors opinion on my diet.

Remember doctors think its ok to inject people with bits of dead cow, most of thier medicines are based on animals so they do not see the value propostion for vegetarianism at all.

Its easier for them to say "you need to eat meat". It saves them having to think.

The best advert are all the veggies that have a balanced diet.

snow_leopard_33 has just joined, not bothered to even answer a single question yet comes into the veggie group and tries to stir up trouble.

Fox's, leopards or other such beasts are not welcome here.

Anyway back to the question - doctors do not study diet or nutrition, they cut open fat people or use liposuction and don't know much about food.
