I have had herpes for 3 years. I am turning 7 months pregnant on monday and wondering if I should start suppressive therapy now or wait until at least 30 weeks..
My midwife gave me the okay to start therapy at 24 weeks but I felt it was too early.
I am having lots of outbreaks lately and just trying to do whats safest for my child.

As I stated, im seeing a midwife not an actual doctor.
I am being seen at a Naval Hospital because my husband is a US Marine. I have been wrongfully diagnosed at this hospital with a UTI when I was only having gas pains. There are no "REAL" hospitals or "REAL" experts around here. This is why im hoping to gain advice from women who have genital herpes + have delivered healthy children.

You need to either trust your midwifes orders or if you don't feel comfortable with her recommendations then talk to your doctor and get his opinion. Only a your medical provider or a pharamcist can tell you if it is safe.

Yes valacyclovir (Valtrex) is safe during pregnancy although the safety in breast feeding is unknown which does not mean that it is not safe. The Food and Drug Administration lists valacyclovir as pregnancy category B meaning no known risk which is generally taken to mean quite safe. Another way to look at this is that not taking valacyclovir at the time of delivery (which is not generally something you plan to the day) may pose a risk for the child so go with the valacyclovir and do not worry.

you should start suppressive therapy in your final month. Your baby is protected and you shouldn't worry about infecting him/her. however labor is a different story. If you are suffering through an outbreak during labor, you will need to opt for a c-section. I know what you're going through. I'm currently on valtrex and in my final month of pregnancy.

When I was pregnant my OB said not to use anything for my out breaks. If you ask an OB they say that you should take no drugs while pregnant but some are safer then others.

The effect during pregnancy have not been adequately studied. If you were my patient, I would tell you not to take it as a precaution for the fetus.

ok, if the Dr has given you the ok, and YOU (the non-Dr) thinks it is too early, who should you REALLY be listening to? obviously the Dr has the degree and knows better than you. And I am sure the health of the baby was the midwife's top priority, so stop asking questions on here, and do what the Dr said.
