I'm throwing a Christmas party for friends. I need some ideas.

I've searched the internet and I keep coming up with the same lame ideas. This is a party that is for adults only (and I don't mean x-rated!). My friends are drinkers, so holiday drinking games would be fun. It is also hard to get everyone's attention when they're partying so I need something that catches their attention. We always play the gift game where everyone brings a gift, wrapped with no name on it and then we play a game to determine who gets what gift. That's always a hit. But I feel like I need something else. Maybe something that can be played throughout the night while everyone is eating, drinking, etc?

Any ideas? (I am on somewhat of a tight budget). I should probably tell you also that we're inviting around 40 people of which we expect maybe 20-30 to show up. Most of us are in our twenties and thirties.

Thanks!

Thanks for the tips.

I didn't mean continuously play a game all night. I've heard of a couple different games like everyone wears a Santa hat and the host or hostess of the party takes their off first. From that point on everyone else needs to take theirs off and the last one wearing the hat has to do a shot of something gross or something. This can go on for hours, or as long as the first person keeps their hat on for. It's fun because everyone is preoccupied with eating, drinking, and mingling.

I was looking for things like that.

Karoke machines are always fun. Maybe you know someone you can borrow one from?

If you get music (you can buy it at walmart), make sure to get a couple with a mixture of different well known music on them.. it will give people a variety and will save you money.

A cute party idea: mad lib "the night before christmas". Take the story, and remove some words throughout it, and without anyone knowing that it is the common story, go around the room and let everyone pick a verb, adjective, etc. to fill in the blanks. After everyone has given a fill in, read your NEW story to the group.

A lot of people may not want to play games ALL night long. They like to mingle and be merry.
Maybe you can play one of those DVD trivia games all night - at least it's something that will keep people entertained all night and will not commit them to a sit-down game.

murder mystery game - works well with socializing - though murder may not be best topic for the holiday season.

some sort of scavenger hunt - include items people may have on/with them to make it more interesting - or tell everyone to bring a different item and find items by talking to people.
