so i'm driving to church w/ the top down....

i notice a ford explorer keeping pace w/ me. i don't look and keep going. he's staying w/ me for a mile @ about 70 mph. i get tired of it so i speed up to 85 mph to pass him and in my rearview mirror notice he's still following. he catches up and paces me again alongside of me. finally i get tired of it. i jump in the carpool lane doing over 100 mph to get away and i notice he's still trying to follow me. he gets closer and i lose him jumping off the off-ramp.

i ask you why?

he didn't want to race me. i've raced others before and they've kept pace and tried to pass me. this guy just keeps pace. all my friends would have honked the horn or yelled my name or even called my cell phone.

what should i do if this happens in the future? what would you do?

I have no idea why he was pacing you if indeed he was. But you are showing classic symptoms of road rage, and you don't want to do that. Don't play games, don't speed up and for God's sake don't go 100 just because you see the same car in your rear view mirror. You need to mind your driving and keep at the speed limit. I can hear it now, "Did you know you were doing over 100 in the car pool lane?" "But officer, there was this car..."
Yeah, right. Sign here.

Pull off the road and drive to a safe spot, such as a police or fire station. He will probably not follow you there.

Some other places that would be safe have closed circuit TV systems, such as banks and 7-11 stores. Go inside and tell the manager you are being followed and ask them to call the cops for you.

slow down and let him pass

Some people like to follow a car on a freeway. Because follow is easier than lead by drive at late night

If you have a cell phone, next time call 911. They will be glad to talk to him for you.

Do not speed and risk hurting us...including our children.

Pull over and let them pass and avoid stress and accidents or even tickets.

Forget about it. He either thinks you are the best looking thing he has seen in years, or the opposite.

When you're alongside of him, apply your brakes, smile and wave joyfully, allowing him to zoom past. Shazaam, you're done.
