According to legend, Popanipacetl. He was a lowly slave who was due to be sacrificed to the sun god by the ancient Aztecs. Unfairly, he was also forced to carry the corn for the sacrfice, as well as being a sacrifice himself. In his panic, he dropped a head of corn (or maize) into the fire. Some of the corn popped straight back out again, and his tribe thought this was magic and that he would be spared by the gods if thrown into the fire.
He wasn't, unfortunately, so his glory was short-lived. Popcorn is still called popanipacetl by some people in Central America.

Maya invented first the popcorn unintentionally. They first made corn flour for bread and thought how would it be if they wouldn`t make it like a dust. It was the accident that made the popcorn you now hold in your hands at movies! :P

I reckon it was some little American Indian kid who chucked some corn into the fire and when he worked out it made that noise, he did it to scare all his friend. One of his younger friends put it into his mouth after it popped and then they all wanted to eat it.
OK I did just make it up but its better than the microwave story above from JJ. That one was just dumb!! :o)

The Native Americans knew how to do it. I imagine anyone who lived in areas where corn grew natively figured it out...
Take fire, add dry corn... whoah!
