The only thing you can really do is take the trash out of his reach while your gone, of course when you are at home if he tries to get in the trash, tell him NO and make him understand that it is not appropriate behavor...Labs are a very smart breed and eager to please...but he is also still in the puppy stage...dogs are considered to still be in the puppy stage until they are 2yrs. old, and curiousity, chewing, and getting into stuff such as trash is just part of that...most grow out of it with proper time and training...Good Luck!

Either put the trash can in the garage or outside for the day (my mother in law does this) or put the trash can under the sink and go and buy those baby proofing things that keep cupboards closed.

Well, try not leaving him near where the trash is and he probably won't get into it. If you're leaving him indoors try taking your trash out to the can before you leave. If you're leaving him outdoors try putting a secure lid over the garbage can, one he can't knock off or else just move it completely to a place he can't reach or have any temptations. Good luck ! ! ! . . .Bee

Do you have a large pet carrier? Show him his mess scold him then put him in the carrier for 30 min. to 1 hr. this will have to be repeated for a month or two. Labs are very smart. As puppies they have a VERY SHORT attention span. He will forget often what he was in trouble for. With repetition he will remember. Also to house train him, put him in the carrier (in the house) at night. Let him outside as soon as you can in the morning. Within a couple months he will be house broke. In general dogs will not go wear they sleep.

A very strong deterant .. Buy amonia from the supermarket and spray the trashcan with it... The smell is offensive to them.. Finding a new spot for the trash can is albeit easir..:)
