The only way that CD would work is if you have a 64 Bit CPU. If you do have one then you can boot to the CD however, I don't think that is what you are looking for.
You are looking for what is called a Live Linux CD. Knoppix is the most popular (http://www.knoppix.net) There are several others. You can read about all the different linux distros at the Distro Watch web site (http://www.distrowatch.com).

It has to be a live CD if you want to run Linux off the CD as opposed to installing it onto the hard drive, put it in and try it, just don't click on install if its an install CD unless you want to install it.

This site has a bunch of live Linux CD's that you can download, burn and run.

Your CD is an installer CD and not a Live CD.

The Ubuntu Live CD has the best live CD available by far.

You can order a free Live and Installer CD at: http://www.ubuntu.com
