What's a "good" mileage to look for when buying an used VW?

I'm planning to buy an used VW, just wondering what is a good mileage to look for? what is the average life for an VW engine?

My 3 Golfs ('87, '95, 2000) were going strong when I upgraded them - the average for them was 175,000 miles. They all also averaged 28-30 mpg. The '95 made it to almost 250,000 miles (I gave it to my then-boyfriend when I got the '00).

At least 20 MPG highway

They last about 165,000 miles or so (depending on treatment)
