In large part you're correct as I see it,the new testament is essentially that which came after the birth of Jesus although there are basic elements of the Old Testament which will still exist in some manner within the New Testament. The Old Testament if you really wanted to get down to it is essentially the Torah with changes,or at least the basic story is the same. Except that the Christians had a wholly different view of Hell and of Lucifer who if I understand correctly the Jews did not view as Gods enemy so much as Gods way of testing us to make us worthy.

Ecclesiastes 1:9 The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and THERE IS NO NEW THING UNDER THE SUN!

10 Is there any thing whereof it may be said, See, this is new? it hath been already of old time, which was before us.

Yadah (Jude) 1: 3 Beloved, when I gave all diligence to write unto you of the common salvation, it was needful for me to write unto you, and exhort you that ye should earnestly contend for the faith which was once delivered unto the saints.

But if I am delayed, I write so that you may know the right and proper way to conduct yourself in THE HOUSE OF YAHWEH, who are the called out ones of the living Father, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The Old and New Testaments are actually covenants. When Jesus fulfilled the plan for redemption a new covenant was put in place to allow all people to enter into a relationship with Him and to become heirs to all the promises in the Bible. Many of the promises relate to what you can have while still alive as well as the promise of eternal life.
Jesus died and his will is the New Testament (Covenant) that tells of all that was provided to His heirs.

I think you misunderstand, there are literally 54 (66) books, if memory serves.... but there are two main books.... these being the Old and New testament....

The Old Testament was for the Jews.... it was the laws passed on to them to be an upright people before God and to wait for the promised child king..... The OT was filled with all manner of sacrifices for the covering of sin.

The New Testament was the new covenant, if you will, for all of humanity to come and know God and become an upright people.... as the child king had come and we know him as Christ Jesus..... The NT contained only one sacrifice and we know that as Christ Jesus.....

Same God in both..... Nothing has changed!!!!

I think you are asking why is there an Old and New Testament.

You are on the right track. The Old Testament is what happened leading up to the coming of the Messiah, of Jesus Christ. The New Testament is of his birth and life. Think of what the word "testament" means.
