A very good question - Darwin used the specific example of parasitic wasps that paralyse their prey and lay eggs that eat the victim - alive - from the inside.

I bet you get a lot of cut and paste scriptural quotes, but I have yet to hear a convincing reply from a theist. Bear in mind, as you say, that an omnipotent god did not have to create an ecco-system that relied on what, according to the sense of morality and aesthetics he supposedly created in us, a disgusting survival tactic.

Such examples are entirely consistent with natural selection but hard to reconcile with the concept of a benevolent intelligent designer!

Well of course I looked and indeed saw the people who are clearly deluded and said that in the begining it wasn't like that, that it was after the fall of man that the world became like that. Of course that makes no sense, are you telling me God gave lions teeth spcifically designed for tearing flesh but were originally intended to eat plants? But they have to come up with something, because the world as it is is the best argument for evolution,if all animals were vegetarian perhap 60% of the life that currently exists would be able to continue, but with a certain percentage of the population evolving to survive off the weakest members of other populations they not only ensure their own survival but strengthen the species that are their prey by weeding out the weak. Nothing is wasted and everyone benefits, the prey species actually do better because of their predators, not in spite of them.

It is the only way to balance the whole Eco-system.

Otherwise, what if all animals keep on re-producing and in the end, there will just be too many of us on the surface of the earth.
Hunting improves our senses, keeps our heart beating and in a way it keeps us healthy.

But man is smart enough that man created "Exercise Machine". But before this in the stone age, some are carnivorous.

For example, the lizards eat insects that are flying around.
Otherwise, insects will keep on reproducing and suddenly there is an imbalance which will demand for more food for insects and yet there is low supply.

And yet, God's goodness is seen is that God gave us and only us a brain and consciousness to be aware of ourselves and to improve ourselves. Animals do not have these.

So, it's all for the balance on this earth so that Man can live to love and to serve God and then to love and to serve himself as well as his neighbours.

I'm not sure God created animals,It my be mans fears that created animals. Vedanta philosophy says all things are God,God expressing his vision of himself. It is the duality of mind that creates Karma, cause & effect, dividing the world into Good & evil. As sunlight passing through water crystals divides into the colors of the rainbow so to the concepts of mind divide "Good" into good / evil, positive/negative,up/down etc.

His original creation was Eden/Heaven where nobody needed to kill anything.

However, when Adam and Eve managed to get kicked out from the Garden of Eden, they found themselves in real life.

This is where survival is the main issue - and not just for animals!
As humans we have to kill for food too.

Think about it another way, he had the power to create the entire universe, surely he could have made animals that did not need to eat, or even breathe.

God put animals on this earth for our use. Not abuse.
It's a circle of life, each having it's purpose.

It is a part of the cycle of life in keeping a balanced environment. Rabbits eat plants and produce fertilizer, but too many rabbits eat too many plants, so a meat eater provides balance, and also another form of fertilizer.
